Mental Disorders List

The real cause of mental disorders has continued to be a mystery to medical practitioners for a very long time. Though factors like genetic causes, traumatic events, and stress have linked to cause these mental disorders, the real origin of these conditions is yet to be discovered.

Of the many types of mental disorders, some are more commonly manifested than others and are continually affecting people around the world regardless of race, social status, religion, and finances.

We’ll take a closer look at some of the most common types of mental disorders.  One type of mental disorder commonly affecting young adults is personality disorders. These disorders are classified into three clusters according to the most common symptoms they manifest. Cluster A disorders are those that show eccentric behaviors and these are paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders. Cluster B disorders are those that show dramatic or erratic behaviors. These are antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders. Patients that show great anxiety and fearfulness belong to cluster C disorders. These are obsessive-compulsive, dependent, avoidant, and passive-aggressive personality disorders.

The most common symptoms manifested by patients with personality disorders are detachment from society, delusions of grandeur, irritability, being impulsive, aggressive, and distrustful, and craving attention. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to poor personal care, malnutrition, complete separation from society, self-destruction, and suicide.

Another type of mental condition is an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. In this condition, the patient has a strong desire to lose weight due to panic of obesity. But, the reality is they are extremely underweight already. Adolescent girls are mostly affected by this condition, though this can happen to anybody including men. Patients with anorexia are often not aware of their condition. They look at themselves in the mirror and see someone who is fat and overweight, but, in reality, they are extremely thin and underweight already.

The most common signs of anorexia are the strong desire for weight loss, feeling guilty with food intake, irritability and indifference, and fainting and dizziness due to lack of energy. If left untreated, anorexia may lead to schizophrenia. Now if the person has symptoms of schizophrenia he needs to go through a schizophrenia test to confirm the said mental disorder and for him/her to be treated.

Another type of mental disorder is called organic brain disorder, a condition that is usually inherited. This is due to the changes brought about by other diseases in the body affecting the brain and can cause confusion, anxiety, delusion, and irritability. Some of these diseases are concussions or any trauma affecting the head, Huntington’s disease, Senile dementia – Alzheimer’s type, and Parkinson’s disease.
